Hey everyone! So I have been busy designing more teacher binder resources after receiving such great feedback on my first binder bundle! I did however receive some suggestions for the next set of binders. My first set was NOT very printer friendly! :( Even though I loved the design, it was heavy on the black ink. The binder bundles are over 300+ pages so you could see why it would be a good idea to use lighter, more printer-friendly colors! So this new design is mostly white with hints of gold glitter, peach, and mint colors! If you would like to read my TOP TEN TIPS for utilizing teacher binders in the classroom (and check out the first binder bundle design), you can read about … [Read more...]

Getting into Informational Texts
Kids love informational texts, especially when the topic meets one of their interests, and especially when there are lots of colorful pictures! But getting kids to read the texts closely enough to get the most out of them can be the challenging part! There are two things that can help here – focusing on text features / structures, and close reading. When you want to focus on the text features, a page with several short articles, illustrations, and other graphics works great. For close reading, a single, more in-depth article seems to fit the bill. And anything with an easily recognizable structure - one of the specific structures that kids study - will work for studying text structures. … [Read more...]

Building Great Writers
Building Great Writers Over the past 15 years of teaching English to middle school students, I have worked diligently and rigorously on alleviating my frustrations when teaching and reviewing writing. Every year I start out with the same expectations (alright, maybe a dream) that my students will write an articulate first essay that is sprinkled with strong verbs and adjectives, constructed with a solid structure, and speckled with flowing sentences that are craftily placed. However, my hopes soon become a pipe dream, as my students still struggle with the same skills-writing a solid introduction, conclusion, and lengthening their sentences to sound more fluid, refined and … [Read more...]

How To Make Reading FUN!
Hey! Janet from Mrs. D's Firsties here to talk about making Reading FUN! ....I can't stand teaching out of a scripted book. I hate following the exact same routine in Reading groups. If I'm bored, I can't imagine how my students are feeling. Teachers have to make reading FUN! I'm teaching summer school to the incoming first graders. These poor little babies don't know their letter names, letter sounds, and can't read the pre-primer sight words. We spend our time learning about letters, words, and sentences! I have planned most of our activities to go along with the weekly themes of summer school: beach, animals, camping, and sports. Here are my tips to help you make … [Read more...]
The TpT Conference & Advice from Inspirational Sellers!
I am COUNTING DOWN the days until the 2015 Teachers Pay Teachers Conference in Vegas!!! The conference provides the incredible opportunity to connect with other sellers from around the globe. I went last year as a brand new seller and even with my newbie status, I had a fantastic time! I was so concerned that my inexperience and lack of seller connections would hinder me from meeting others and yet everyone was so open and friendly! It was however, overwhelming. I mostly remember running around the Venetian, session to session, having sensory overload. By the end, my voice was completely shot from the effort to be heard over all the excited chatter. And seeing … [Read more...]
