Thanksgiving is a perfect time to bring meaningful traditions and hands-on learning into the classroom. Our students are eager for activities that feel relevant and interactive, and Thanksgiving offers a unique opportunity to blend academics with holiday spirit. For teachers, Thanksgiving activities can be a unique opportunity to blend academics and holiday spirit. It is a great time to encourage collaboration, creative expression, and reflection.
In this post, we’ll look at Thanksgiving-inspired ways to keep students actively involved, whether it’s festive decor that builds classroom spirit or engaging activities tailored for middle schoolers.
These ideas are designed with students in mind (student-centered), allowing them to think critically, express themselves, and enjoy the holiday season in a meaningful way.
Setting the Scene for Thanksgiving Activities

Creating a welcoming, harvest-themed environment will help middle schoolers connect with Thanksgiving on a deeper level. It sets the tone for engagement and fosters a sense of community.
By adding visual elements that students see daily, teachers are immersing them in the season. Here are some ideas to set the scene:
- Thanksgiving Bulletin Board Ideas: Create a gratitude-themed board where students can add notes about what they’re thankful for.
- Classroom Decor: Use autumn colors, turkeys, and fall leaves to make the classroom feel warm and inviting.
- Thanksgiving Google Slides Template | Daily Agenda: Add seasonal slides to your daily routine, including fall-themed agendas and schedules to enhance the classroom experience. Using Google Slides is a great way to keep students organized, introduce daily tasks in a fun way, and reinforce the Thanksgiving theme. For more information about templates and staying organized visit my blog on Classroom Organization Tips.
- Thanksgiving Door Decor: Display a Thanksgiving-themed entryway to welcome students each day. You can use banners to help with this. Hang “Give Thanks” or “Harvest Time” banners to add a festive touch.
These decor ideas help create a seasonal atmosphere, making the classroom a festive, engaging place to learn and celebrate!!
Thanksgiving Activity #1: Thanksgiving STEM Challenge

This resource includes 3 hands-on Thanksgiving-themed STEM challenges that will spark your students’ creativity and critical thinking. Each challenge encourages students to engage in problem-solving, design, and reflection while exploring different concepts like coding, engineering, and game creation. Here’s a closer look at the activities:
-
Turkey Coding: Students will design a turkey craft and assign symbols to represent letters from A to Z. These symbols will form a coded message about turkeys, and students will create an answer key for the symbols. This activity provides a fun introduction to coding while also engaging students with Thanksgiving-themed content.
-
Cornucopia Catch: In this challenge, students will build 5 paper cornucopias and paper fruits/vegetables. The goal is to create a game in which the cornucopias can hold, catch, and toss the paper vegetables. Students will need to devise their own set of game rules and challenges, encouraging creativity while applying engineering principles to test the strength of their cornucopia constructions.
-
Thanksgiving Table: Students will construct a Thanksgiving table using toothpicks and glue. The catch? The table can only have 4 legs, and it must be as strong as possible. This challenge allows students to experiment with structural design and engineering principles while thinking about the stability and strength of their creations.
When to Incorporate It:
These challenges are ideal for the days leading up to Thanksgiving. You can break them into individual sessions, allowing students to focus on one project at a time, or turn them into a multi-day STEM week. They’re perfect for promoting teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills as students engage in fun, hands-on learning.
SavvyTip:
For each challenge, encourage students to brainstorm and sketch their ideas before starting the building process. This helps them plan and think through their designs, making the execution smoother and allowing them to explore different approaches before committing to one.

Thanksgiving Activity #2: Thanksgiving ‘I Am Thankful For…’ Self-Portrait Drawing Kit and Fun Facts Reading Passage
This fun and reflective activity allows students to explore gratitude through art and reading. The kit includes a self-portrait template where students can draw and color what they are thankful for—whether it’s family, friends, pets, or special experiences. Plus, the accompanying Thanksgiving Fun Facts reading passage gives students a deeper understanding of the holiday, its history, and traditions.
When to Incorporate It:
This is perfect for the week before Thanksgiving or as a warm-up activity for students to reflect on what they are thankful for before heading into the break.
SavvyTip:
After completing their self-portraits, have students share one thing they’re thankful for with the class. This promotes a sense of community and opens up opportunities for students to bond over shared experiences.
Activity #3: Thanksgiving Writing Prompts and Activities Pack

This pack is perfect for sparking students’ creativity with Thanksgiving-themed writing prompts! It’s designed to engage students with fun, Common Core-aligned activities while promoting storytelling and reflection. Students will explore fall-inspired topics, from lost little birds to scarecrows and giant piles of leaves. Each prompt is designed to encourage imagination and improve writing skills.
When to Incorporate It:
Use these prompts for a Thanksgiving “Writing Workshop Day”! Set up different stations around the room, each with a different writing prompt, and have students rotate through them. This keeps the activity dynamic and gives students a variety of creative options to explore.
SavvyTip:
To keep students engaged, allow them to choose which prompt they want to write about. Giving students a bit of choice can help them feel more connected to the activity and encourage even more creative responses.
Incorporate Your Activities Today!
To make these activities even more meaningful, consider incorporating peer-sharing sessions where students can present their work. It builds community, encourages public speaking, and allows students to learn from each other’s creativity.
