When students return to the classroom from winter break, they may feel sluggish. They’ve had an exciting time out of the classroom and are used to sleeping in again. However, the next few months will fly by in the classroom. So, students need to adjust and get ready to learn quickly. They will need some help with this! Thankfully, incorporating goal tracking and SMART goals for the new year in the classroom will be incredibly helpful.
Importance of Setting Goals
Students often dream about the next gaming console or the newest electric scooter. Many think about what they want to do in the future or their academic goals. This is just part of their age. However, they need to hear about the importance of setting goals. Let’s help them to understand that they are much more likely to have high expectations of themselves once they’ve created a goal.
Tracking Goals in the Classroom
When incorporating goal tracking and SMART goals for the new year in the classroom, there are many techniques to try.
The first technique involves walking students through attainable SMART goals. For instance, have them create a specific goal. Instead of “getting good grades,” have them make this specific. Which classes do they want to earn a better grade in? What do they want their grades to be? Then, make it measurable. For instance, do they want to do better on unit tests? Do they want to see an increase by the end of their quarter? They must have something to work towards. Additionally, make sure the goal is relevant to them. It needs to be something they feel passionate about versus what a friend thinks. By walking students through the SMART components, they will understand what it takes to set an attainable goal.
It is one thing to set a goal and another to work towards it. So, implement a supportive New Years classroom. To do this, have students actually write down their goals. Studies show that writing a goal by hand already increases the chance of completing it. Then, create times to check in with students. Life is chaotic in 2024. Students need to stop and reflect. This may happen in your classroom every other week or halfway through the quarter. Do whatever works for your classroom and students. Just remember to have them track their progress. This will help ensure they are on the right path to attaining their goals.
New Year Activities
There is always so much to plan. Thankfully, resources are ready for you when incorporating goal tracking and SMART goals for the new year in the classroom.
