Benefits of Using Technology

Students love technology! Whether it is a phone, computer, or gaming device, tech is a favorite among students. So, teaching history with technology is a fantastic way to increase interest and engagement. Additionally, technology leads to increased interactivity with all the available digital tools for history teachers. For instance, students can explore previous civilizations through web quests! On top of this, there is easy access to primary sources. The internet has so much to offer to bring learning alive for students. Ultimately, technology in history classrooms allows students to build their development of 21st-century skills through interactive lessons.

Types of Technology to Consider

When using interactive history activities, there are so many to consider! For example, interactive PowerPoints allow students to click and explore different links. Additionally, tablets and smartphones add a wealth of history EdTech tools to lessons. There are so many apps and features to explore on these devices. Similarly, Virtual Reality (VR) headsets allow students to explore areas around the world from their classroom. Learning will be so much fun with virtual history lessons.

Online Resources

Since it is impossible to travel back in time, online resources bring the past to the present. There are educational websites and databases to ensure students have a wealth of knowledge to explore. Additionally, virtual museum tours help students see artifacts and artwork without traveling. There are even online primary source libraries to show students historical documents.

Interactive Learning Activities

Students do not want to sit in their seats all day. They want to be up and moving around. So, virtual field trips to historical sites allow them to travel worldwide! There are even Ancient Civilization Bell Ringers that enable them to take charge of their learning while exploring Ancient Civilizations.

Assessments and Technology

While no one loves giving assessments, they are a great way to ensure students are learning. So, teachers can use middle school history technology to provide digital quizzes and exams. Additionally, there are online peer review platforms to help everyone work together. Students can even create E-portfolios for history projects. Thankfully, this means they can look back on their past projects for years to come.

Tips for Successful Integration

When implementing history lesson plans, tech is always touch and go. The internet may be out, or devices may be having too many problems. So, it is essential to have a backup plan. This may be a printed activity or resources to ensure students can keep learning. On top of this, it will take time to train students on new tools. They will not be familiar with new devices and websites, so it is crucial to incorporate time for them to learn how tech works. It will also be essential to align technology use with learning objectives. Learning is at the heart of school, so the tech resources must support- not hinder or distract- learning.
