Students love learning about holidays! It is always so much fun whenever we get to celebrate a holiday in the classroom. While all holidays are exciting, I especially love to teach about ones students might not always be as familiar with. These holidays create such a magical feeling in the classroom, and students are always eager to learn more with each lesson. For instance, teaching about the Year of the Dragon is a favorite unit every year. Thankfully, there are incredible Year of the Dragon: Lunar New Year activities for 2024 ready for your students.
What is the Year of the Dragon?
People celebrate the Chinese New Year in China and other Asian countries. The celebration lasts for 15 days, reflecting the moon cycle. Since the holiday dates reflect this, the starting date changes. In 2024, it will begin on February 10th. Additionally, each year features a different animal. So, it is the dragon in 2024 and the snake in 2025.
One neat aspect about the Year of the Dragon is that approximately 10 days before the beginning, houses become spotless! People thoroughly clean to remove any bad luck that might be lingering inside.
Lucky Colors and Numbers
There are also lucky colors. The Lunar New Year 2024 colors include red for vitality and passion. Additionally, yellow represents optimism and prosperity, and green represents renewal and growth. People believe that colors have a powerful effect on emotions and actions.
The lucky numbers include 8, 14, and 21.
