Are your students participating in distance (or digital) learning this year? If so, the use of digital interactive notebooks in Google Classroom is a must! I love the flexibility and multiple uses that these digital tools offer. In regards to ELA, students can simply fill out their templates in Google Slides while reading a novel or keeping a reading log. The template also works for any ELA unit or lesson, such as literary response and analysis. In this blog post, I am sharing my favorite templates I have available in the Reading Digital Interactive Notebook Templates resource. I also have a FREE Digital Reading Log to share with you!
Character Development and Profiles
This template is perfect for ANY novel study! Students can type in all the details of the characters from their books; such as their name, age, physical description, personality traits, etc. They can expand on this by analyzing whether the character changed from the beginning of the novel to the end.. If so, how did they change throughout the story?
Themes
Themes in a book often refer to a message or a lesson that was learned by the characters. It is common for novels to have more than one important theme. Some popular themes in children’s literature include: friendship, courage, identity or belonging, love, kindness, honesty, perseverance, and growing up. In this template, students can analyze and describe themes found in their reading.
Plot
There are five important stages to analyze in a story’s plot: an introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and the resolution. Students can go through each stage and fill out the template.
Reading Logs (Free Teaching Resource!)
We know reading is greatly beneficial to students, but it also provides a break from screen time, especially during distance learning. The reading logs provide a way for students to track their hours and page numbers. This log also gives them a space to fill in a quick summary of what they have read, so they can look back and remember important events from their reading.

Letter to a Character
While reading a book, have you ever wished you could write a letter to a character to warn them of something that’s about it happen? Or maybe you want to warn them about a character who is up to no good? I think about this all the time when I am reading! Your students will enjoy filling this template out, addressing their favorite character and letting them in on the secret.
My Book Rating
Who doesn’t love a good book review? Students can leave a book review and rating. In the template, your students can add or delete stars and describe what you enjoyed (or didn’t enjoy!) about the story.
