Hi Teacher Friends,
Do you love teaching Ancient Civilizations as much as I do? I often feel overwhelmed looking on Pinterest or Instagram with how many great ideas and activities there are out there for Ancient Civs. I could probably spend the whole year in the classroom just focusing on Ancient Egypt alone, with its pyramids, their social hierarchy with pharaohs, and interesting process of mummification. To help narrow down some activities, I’ve listed 5 of my favorite Ancient Egypt ideas and resources!
Here are 5 of my favorite Ancient Egypt activities to do with Upper Elementary and Middle School students:
1.) Ancient Egypt Interactive VocAppulary
Are your students learning vocabulary on Ancient Egypt? This creative resource is a simple, yet effective way for students to learn vocabulary on a specific topic! The perfect tool for learning and memorizing important concepts, combining the use of word walls, flash cards, and illustration. Students will design and illustrate an app for each vocabulary term after defining them. So easy to put together a “smartphone”, just cut and paste! (instructions included) (Editable) Vocabulary words included in this set: Upper Egypt, Lower Egypt, Black Lands, Red Lands, The Old Kingdom, The Middle Kingdom, The New Kingdom, pharaoh, mummification, hieroglyphics, Giza, hieratic script, chariot, Hatshepsut, Tutankhamen, Ramses II

2. Ancient Egypt Canopic Jars – STEAM Challenge
This challenge definitely implements the A (arts) in STEAM! Using a list of supplies, groups of 4-5 design 4 canopic jars. Using 4 slices of apple, students must test different mixtures using salt, baking soda, vinegar, and sugar. Out of the 4 slices, they must have a control group (no ingredients used on the apple) to measure the mummification process. They need to write down the exact measurements for each mixture using a page found in the resource. Each Canopic Jar needs to be labeled with the mixture. After applying the mixtures to the apples, they are placed inside the sealed jars. For the next four days, students must record their observations during the mummification process.

3. Ancient Egypt Pyramid STEM Challenge
In this fun STEM challenge, students must design either a freestanding square or rectangular pyramid. The goal of the challenge is to design the tallest pyramid in the shortest amount of time. If glue is used instead of non-drying clay or marshmallows, allow for drying time. Students only need to use the timer during building time. They can stop the clock while their pyramid dries. The group who can build the tallest pyramid in the shortest amount of time wins the challenge!
