The Best Teaching Tool for Learning Math Concepts!

July 5, 2019 by StudentSavvy 9 Comments

I’ll be honest with you – I was a student who REALLY struggled with math in school. I couldn’t see how it applied to every-day life or other learning subjects. I know that if my teachers had provided me with this tool growing up, it would have been a GAME-CHANGER. I created this math tool with my younger self and students in mind!

All teachers have their favorite go-to methods for teaching math to their students. If students are struggling with memorizing math concepts, you may want to try this fun, interactive method!

Interactive VocAPPulary™ is a simple, yet effective way for students to learn vocabulary on a specific topic! What is unique about Interactive VocAPPulary™ is that it combines the use of illustration, word walls, and flashcards in a trendy, student-friendly package.

Illustration

Creating drawings for each vocabulary word is not only creative fun, but it also allows students to create a visual that they can reference when trying to memorize a new word or concept. The innovative process of coming up with an image that represents the word, will further ingrain that concept into the student’s mind.

Flashcards

Flashcards have been around forever! That’s because they work! They are so effective because they utilize active recall. The repetitive process of actively trying to remember a definition allows information to move from short term memory to long term memory. Eventually, you can close your eyes and picture the words without having to flip the flashcard over to view the definition or answer. Interactive VocAPPulary™ is, well, interactive! Students can flip the image up to reveal a definition. Each “Smartphone” contains essentially 16 flashcards on each unit!

Word Wall

Interactive VocAPPulary™ is essentially a hand-held word wall!  Students can group that information together, decorating their Smartphones and viewing the images and vocabulary words together.  It takes the fun concept of Smartphones and has students designing their own unique apps. Each “Smartphone” has a theme or unit – such as “Ecosystems” -with 16 apps reflecting that theme.

Interactive VocAPPulary™ combines the very best strategies for learning vocabulary and presents them in a fun way your students will simply LOVE! They can put their Smartphones on a ring, combining the units for the entire year!

So far I have designed a Math Bundle, a Vocabulary Builder, and Earth Science VocAPPulary™, but there will be many more units to come! Follow StudentSavvy on TpT to receive updates for the next set of Interactive VocAPPulary!

If you have any requests, please visit my Q&A page on TpT.

Thank you for all your INSIGHTs, one way I found useful was to choose my words SURROUNDING a problem, if it is an equation suCh as 2N + 5 = 11. I read this as “ there exist a number that when I multiply it by two and add Five To the result, then the answer is eLeven. What is that number?

If it doesn’t contain an equals sign then it is an expreSsion. IS there informaTion that tells us the value of the number we are opera on? Then we can find a number answer by following the INSTRUCTIONS that are listed according to the agreed rules of algebra.
If there is no equals sign, then sOmetimes we can use the rules for Using numbers and times tables to make tge expression simpler but we don’t have enough information to end un with a number ansWer.
THEN revieW the number laws and the tiMes table .
My emaIl address is all lower case.

Please! I need these. How can I get them. I do homeschool with a wide range 3rd-5th and 8th. My children are struggling. I can see where I could have and still would use them. Personally I love math, I just couldn’t understand why the words and letters were in there.
